When you think about summer, what comes to mind? Is it the nostalgic scent of sunscreen, a much-needed dose of vitamin D, or… the exhausting balancing act of juggling vacations, parenting, and productivity?

We had the pleasure of interviewing Erin Zeller, TCWGlobal’s Senior Vice President of Human Resources, who shared her insights on navigating the summer season while maintaining your productivity and well-being. Here are three top tips to help you stay cool, calm, and collected this summer!

  • Get Your Head in the Game (Plan)

If you’re a parent, you know that summer schedules can be inconsistent and difficult to navigate. This is where planning comes into play.

Erin: “You don’t just need a weekly game plan. You need a daily, hour-by-hour game plan! Meet consistently as a family to go over sports schedules, childcare arrangements, vacation plans—whatever scheduling needs may affect your family. Review the schedule together and set realistic expectations.”

This proactive approach minimizes last-minute surprises and ensures that everyone’s needs and commitments are considered. But be ready for the unexpected!

Erin: “Planning ahead is important, but things will inevitably shift. You have to go into each day with both a game plan and a flexible mindset! If you’re mentally prepared for last-minute schedule changes, they won’t throw you off so much.”

  • Hydrate Like an Olympian

While most of us will be watching the 2024 Summer Olympics from our phones and televisions, a full day of work can feel like an Olympics of its own. Between making big decisions, attending important meetings, and enduring long hours of screen time, your brain and body need hydration. With the added heat that summer brings, you’ll likely need even more water than usual.

Erin: “Do yourself a favor and buy a reusable water bottle. Keep it at your desk and sip on it all day long. Proper hydration will not only keep you refreshed and alert but also help regulate your body temperature on those particularly hot days!”

  • Create a Summer Work Bucket List

Summer isn't just about vacations and outdoor fun—it’s also a great time to set some exciting goals at work. Creating a work bucket list can help you stay motivated and make the most of the season.

Erin: “I love creating summer bucket lists for my family to complete, but you can also do the same thing at work! Summer is a great time to work on those passion projects you’ve been putting on the back burner and tackle those organizational tasks that will get you ready for the fall.”

  • Make the Small Moments Count

Whether you’re a parent trying to make this summer enjoyable for your kids or a social butterfly who wants to enjoy time with your friends, it can be easy to feel a wave of guilt for not taking advantage of the summer. This is your friendly reminder that summer doesn’t have to be full of grand adventures to be memorable!

Erin: “I love to give my kids big experiences, but big experiences don’t have to be difficult to pull off! They can be at home, they can be simple, and they can even be free. Maybe it’s a scavenger hunt around the house on a Saturday, a picnic in the park on a Sunday afternoon, or a spontaneous day trip to the mountains. Those summer memories last just as long as the big vacations!”

  • Allow Yourself to Rest

Sometimes, a break is just what the doctor ordered! Whether you’re planning an elaborate vacation, a few days to unwind at home, or a long lunch on a Friday, stepping away from work allows you to recharge and be more productive in the long run!

Erin: “Spending time with friends, taking solo walks, and going on family vacations are just a few of the important ways I recharge. Though it can sometimes be difficult during busy seasons, it’s important to take breaks, allow yourself to rest, and be present where you’re at! Rest sets us up for success in the long run.”
