New York to Require Certain Workplace Violence Protections for Retail Workers

Last month, New York’s governor signed a bill - mirrored after California’s workplace violence prevention bill - that will require certain companies in New York to provide additional workplace violence prevention programs for their retail workers. The bill is limited to those companies that have at least ten workers working at a retail store for them; retail stores are defined as establishments that sell consumer goods at retail, that do not primarily sell food.  

Companies that meet these definitions will be required to provide retail workers with a written workplace violence prevention policy, notice of the policy, and training that includes various tactics to prevent or deescalate potentially violent situations in their workplace.  

The bill further obligates covered companies with at least 500 retail workers to install either physical or mobile-phone based panic buttons by January 1, 2027.
