Worker Classifications

Cameroon has fixed-term and permanent Workers. Workers in supervisory positions may be entitled to additional severance.

Fixed-Term Contracts

Fixed-Term contracts in Cameroon are allowed for up to 2 years and may be renewed once. If the fixed-term contract is for longer than 2 months, it must be submitted in writing to the local labor board. Fixed-term contracts may only be terminated for acts of gross misconduct, force majeure, or with the written consent of both parties. If a fixed-term contract is terminated early, the Worker may be entitled to severance pay equal to the remainder of the contract duration.

Probationary Periods

Generally, probationary periods in Cameroon last six months for regular Workers. Workers in supervisory positions may be on probation for up to eight months. During the probationary period, Workers may be dismissed without notice, but are entitled to severance. The probationary period must be in writing. If a Worker continued to work after the probationary period and there is no contract in place, the Worker is automatically transitioned to an indefinite contract.

Holidays

Cameroon has approximately 10 public holidays per year. However it is common for the government to add 1 more holiday during the year. Any time worked on a public holiday is paid at 150% of the Worker's normal wage.
 
 

Vacation

Workers in Cameroon are entitled to a vacation accrual of 1.5 days per month. After 5 years of service, Worker's vacation accruals increase to 2 vacation days per month. Vacation may be accrued and carried over to the following year for up to two years, unless otherwise specified in individual contracts or collective agreements.

Sick Leave

In Cameroon, Workers are entitled to 5 paid sick days per year. Following the initial 5 days, Workers may receive up to six months of paid sick leave through the National Social Insurance Fund upon obtaining the required medical certifications. If a Worker is on sick leave for over six months, their contract may be terminated.

Working Hours

The average work week in Cameroon is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Any time above 40 hours per week is considered overtime. Workers are entitled to at least one day of rest per week for a consecutive 24 hours.
 
 

Overtime

Overtime in Cameroon is paid at 120% of the Worker's usual wage during the first eight hours. The second eight hours are compensated at 130% of the Worker's usual wage. Any time above 16 hours, up to 20 hours per week, are compensated at 140% of the Worker's usual wage. Night work contributes to overtime allotment.

Mandatory Bonuses

In Cameroon, every Worker that has accomplished twelve months of service in an organization is entitled to a thirteenth month salary. The thirteenth month salary is equal to one months o the Worker’s usual salary and is generally paid in December of each year.

Termination

Contracts in Cameroon may be terminated at any time by either party, so long as there is notice or payment in lieu and appropriate severance. The length of the notice period is set by the Minister in charge of Labour and is based on the length of service. Notice ranges from 1-4 months. Workers with less than five years of service are entitled to 20% of their salary for the last twelve months as severance. Workers are entitled to two days off of work when they receive notice so they may look for another position. Certain groups, such as pregnant women, Worker’s representatives, trade union officials, and Workers on sick leave, are protected from termination.

Resignation

There are no requirements for Worker resignation in Cameroon.
