Worker Classifications

In Sierra Leone, Workers may have indefinite or fixed-term contracts. Contracts may be either written or verbal, however verbal contracts may not be longer than 6 months. All fixed-term contracts must be in writing.

Fixed-Term Contracts

Fixed-term contracts are allowed in Sierra Leone for up to 12 months, including one renewal. A Worker who has served the same company for a period of 12 months or more shall become entitled to all benefits allotted for indefinite Workers.
 
 

Probationary Periods

Probationary periods in Sierra Leone may not extend longer than 6 months.
 
 

Holidays

Sierra Leone recognizes 14 public holidays per year. Workers are entitled to these days off, but do not receive pay.
 
 

Vacation

Workers in Sierra Leone accrue paid annual vacation based on their years of service. Workers who have been engaged for 1 to 5 years are entitled to 19 days of leave. Workers who have 5 to 10 years of service receive 22 days. Finally, if a Worker has more than 10 years of service, they are entitled to 28 days of paid annual vacation.

Sick Leave

Workers are entitled to 5 days of paid sick leave per year.
 
 

Working Hours

The standard working hours in Sierra Leone are 40 hours per week. Workers are entitled to at least one designated rest day per week. If work must be performed on the designated rest day, Workers are entitled to the same wage premiums as overtime.
 
 

Overtime

Workers who work beyond the standard 40-hour workweek qualify for overtime pay. Overtime pay on weekdays is compensated at a premium of 150% of the Worker’s usual wage.
 
 

Mandatory Bonuses

There are no mandatory bonuses in Sierra Leone.
 
 

Termination

Indefinite contracts may be terminated with a minimum of 30 days’ notice in writing. Severance is calculated per the Employment Act of 2023. For the first 1-5 years of service, the Worker is entitled to 30 days of wages for each year of service. From the 5th through 10th years, Workers receive 40 days' wages for each year of service. Finally, from 10 years onward, the Worker receives an additional 7 days of wages for each year completed after 10 years.

Resignation

Worker's may resign with a minimum of 30 days notice.
